North AmericaMachines, nails, screws and glues well. Can be sanded, painted, or stained to a good finish. When stained, it blends with walnut, mahogany or cherry. It dries easily with little degrade and has good dimensional stability.  Ranges in grade from Knotty to Clear.Janka: 590 ● Relative Cost: $$
     
  
North AmericaMachines, nails, screws and glues well, and can be stained to a very good finish.  It has very good overall strength properties relative to its weight. It has excellent shock resistance and is good for steam bending. Janka: 1320 ● Relative Cost:  $
  
North AmericaMachines, nails and glues well and can be stained to a good finish. The wood dries fairly rapidly with a strong tendency to warp, split, surface check and shrink.  It is heavy, hard, strong, high in resistance to shock and highly suitable for steam bending. Good resistance to abrasive wear.Janka: 1300  ●  Relative Cost: $$
  
North AmericaMachines, nails, screws and glues well, and can be stained to an exceptional finish.  It has very good overall strength properties relative to its weight. It dries slowly with little degradation but high shrinkage.  It has excellent shock resistance and is good for steam bending.Janka: 1260  ●  Relative Cost: $$$
     
  
BrazilModerately difficult to work with blunting effect on cutters. Nails poorly, but screws, glues and stains well.  Very strong, pliable, shock resistant, hard and moderately durable with mild surface checking and warping.  Is typically orange/brown color when freshly cut but quickly turns deep red/brown.Janka: 2350  ●  Relative Cost: $$$$$
  
North AmericaMachines, nails, screws, glues, and stains well. Polishes to an excellent finish.  It has a smooth texture, fine, straight grain with narrow brown pith flecks and small gum pockets.  It is widely held in fine furniture making circles that one does not stain Cherry!Janka: 950  ●  Relative Cost: $$$$
  
North AmericaIt is heavy, hard and difficult to machine and glue.  It has a high tendency toward shrinkage and splitting so pre-boring is advised for all fasteners.  It is very tough and resilient with an even textured grain pattern that ranges from light-to-dark and can be sanded and stained to a good finish.Janka: 1820  ●  Relative Cost: $$
     
  
AfricaA good alternative to Honduran M. which has long-term concern about it’s continued abundance.  Moderate blunting effect on cutters.  Brittle heartwood and interlocked grain can be fractured and cause tearout when cut and woolliness when sanded. Nails, screws and glues well. Stains and polishes to an excellent finish.Janka: 830 ● Relative Cost: $$$$

North AmericaIt is hard and heavy with good strength properties and high resistance to abrasion and wear. It has high shrinkage and some movement. With care it machines and turns well and glues satisfactorily. Pre-boring is advised for nailing and screwing.  It can be polished and stained to an excellent finish, especially in brown tones. North AmericaOther than being about 30% softer and slight color variations it is very similar in most respects to hard maple.  It machines well and glues, screws, and nails satisfactorily.  It dries slowly with minimal shrinkage and movement.  It can be polished and stained to an excellent finish, especially in brown tones.Janka: 950 ● Relative Cost: $$
  
North AmericaIt machines, nails and screws well but pre-boring is recommended.  It can be stained to a good finish in a wide range of tones.  It is relatively hard and heavy and has great wear-resistance.  Red Oak is very abundant and the most widely used species.Janka: 1290 ● Relative Cost: $

It is relatively hard and heavy and has great wear-resistance.  It can be stained to a good finish in a wide range of tones. North AmericaA Softwood (conifer) that has moderately high shrinkage and degradation but is stable when properly seasoned.  Machines fairly well with some gumming of blades by resins.  It can be nailed, screwed glued and painted satisfactorily and accepts stains and enamel well with some preparation. It is highly resistant to wear.  Janka: 690 ● Relative Cost: $
  
North AmericaA versatile soft and lightweight wood that machines, nails, screws, glues and bores easily. It dries easily with minimal shrinkage or movement. It paints, stains, and enamels exceptionally well, especially in darker tones.  It is frequently used in paint grade applications or finished to look like other woods. North AmericaIt is a tough medium density hardwood that machines nails, screws and glues well.  Its colors range from creamy white to chocolate brown, often with a purplish cast.  It accepts paint and stain for an exceptional finish.  It dries slowly and care is needed to avoid kiln degrade but it has good dimensional stability.Janka: 1010 ● Relative Cost: $$$$
